The Rhythm of Death

El Ritmo de la Muerte (The Rhythm of Death)

The artist Gabriel Sánchez Viveros presents the exhibition "El Ritmo dela Muerte" accompanied by two reinterpretations of pre-hispanic offerings, which were placed at ground level due to its cosmogony and its relationship with the underworld, which was believed to be the first place to which the souls of the deceased went, to purify their physical body through the earth and their soul for all that they had experienced in life.

In these reinterpretations, elements of traditional mexican altars are used such as candles, which symbolize the light that illuminates the path of the dead, the marigold flower representing the sun that helps guide the path of souls with its color and aroma and the salt that is used as a symbol of purification.

In our country the offerings of the Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) are very diverse and according to the place where they are presented, the elements that make them up have similar meanings but there are some essentials that cannot be missed, such as flowers, salt, water, food and candles. In this case the artist decided to merge the elements in order to create an altar that we can all appropriate. One of them invites the visitor to participate, by writing on a card the name of a loved one to whom he wants to offer the altar, in order to spread one of the most important traditions of our country and thus establishing a link between nations, cultures and beliefs.

Gabriel Sánchez Viveros decided to give a special space to the children's altar to add playful elements, white candles and musical instruments that are linked to the work of the character that it was decided to honor on this occasion, the mexican composer Agustín Lara, known as “El flaco de oro” (The skinny golden guy) and for his extraordinary compositions such as “Amor de mis amores”, “Maria bonita” and “Farolito” highlighting the songs composed to the cities of Madrid and Granada within his collection called "La Suite Española".

The exhibition "El Ritmo de la Muerte" presents a series of interactive pictorial work which refers to themes that inspired the songs of the mexican musician and that also tell us about the link between music and death.

Artists live from time;
they make each instant eternal,
they transform it into something infinite.
